English I - Honors with Mr. P

where to come for the important stuff and things...

Please note that the instructional sheets for the 2nd and 3rd element of the Press Kit have been uploaded to the right-hand side of the page.

Reminders:

- Your Press Kit is due THIS WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10TH!!
- You will need a spiral notebook for the next few weeks of class - it doesn't have to be a huge spiral; just a small, 70-pager should be more than plenty.

Mr. P

Good afternoon, students.

Please note that a new document has been added to the "Important Files" section on the right-hand side of the page. This is for your FINAL COPY of your visual/non-visual section of your Press Kit. I strongly suggest that you type up your answers on this sheet, then print it out to put in your Press Kit for a couple of reasons:

a. You can write more and fill up less space.
b. You can go back and backspace rather than make messy cross outs everywhere.

Remember, your assignment for tonight is to put yourself in the position of the anchor! Make sure you take another glance at the assignment sheet (which is also attached on the right-hand side of the page).

As always, email me with any questions (cphillips@csisd.org).

Have a great evening!

Mr. P

Hey Students!

Here are the clips from the videos that we watched today in class.

President Obama's "Points of Light" speech at Texas A&M: —http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqP7yPd5GX0

Let me know if you have trouble accessing these.

Just a quick reminder, your persuasion test is this Friday, 1/29! We will be finishing up speeches in class tomorrow then briefly reviewing to get you prepared.

Have a fantastic evening!

Mr. P

Howdy All!

Just a few reminders about your persuasive essay:

1. It's due tomorrow, January 26th!

2. Make sure that the ENTIRE PAPER is in 12 pt., Times New Roman font.

3. Go through the "Fix-Its" sheet - in the Box on the right-hand side of this page - get those things out of your paper! Also, if you lost yours or threw it away, print this one out to keep FOREVER.

4. Go through your checklist (2nd to last page of Persuasive Essay packet). This will hopefully prevent you from making some basic errors in your paper.

5. The following is the order in which you need to turn in materials (top to bottom):
- Rubric (last page of Persuasive Essay packet)
- Final Draft (remember to highlight!)
- Any previous draft(s)
- Shaping the Paragraph sheets (if completed)
- Thesis/topic sentence sheet
- Persuasive planning sheet (the one with the long, rectangular boxes)

This needs to be ready to be turned in whenever you make it to my class tomorrow. No excuses!

As always, if you have any questions, email me at cphillips@csisd.org OR post a comment on the blog! That would be neat.

Happy Writing,

Mr. P

Hey Freshmen!

Fantastic 4th period had their Vocab Test today. Hopefully, your ample studying boded well for you on the exam! Grades will be ready for you tomorrow. 4th period parents, my grade book should be updated by tonight if you want to see your student's score!

4th period assignment: read chapters 5 & 6 of TKM tonight!

Super 2nd period - great discussion today! Since we're a bit ahead of schedule, I'm giving you the night off; however, make sure you are staying up to date with your study guide questions so you know what's going on! We'll continue our amazing discussion tomorrow!

Both classes, I'm interested in your thoughts on Boo. We've heard a lot of gossip about him, but what do YOU think?

Some things to double check for as far as your short stories are concerned:

1. Is it 12 pt. Times New Roman font?

2. Is it double spaced?

3. Do you have your full MLA heading on the first page?

4. Do you have you and your partner's last name & page number (ex. - Anderson/Kavanaugh 3) in the upper-right corner of EVERY PAGE?

5. Is it 3-4 pages?

6. Do you have one-inch margins?

These are just a few things to look for. Your handy dandy checklist has the rest on there. Make sure you look at this very closely in preparation to have everything to turn in tomorrow!

Hopefully, you have started reading the excerpt in your textbook from The Perfect Storm and finding it to be a thrill a minute!

I'm providing links to images that I found interesting and may help you to put the story into perspective.

1. This link will take you to an image of the Satori, the 32-foot sailboat that's being rescued in the story. Remember, this thing was in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in the midst of one of the worst storms in recorded history! Holy moly! http://nelie.hocking.edu/~geckler_e/SATORI/satori.jpg

2. This link will take you to an image of the Tamaroa, the ship that has been dispatched by the United States Coast Guard to rescue the Satori and the people on it. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/ff/USCGC_Tamaroa_WUEC-166_1990.jpg/300px-USCGC_Tamaroa_WUEC-166_1990.jpg

We will be discussing this in class tomorrow, so come prepared to talk!

IMPORTANT!!! READ THIS!!! --> Your short stories are due tomorrow, 09.25! Remember, you need to have evidence of prewriting, revising, and editing. We're talking 2 major grades here, people!

Happy writing!

Mr. Phillips

Good evening students,

Hopefully you are finding that your TAKS short answer practice is being met with great ease. Remember the ABC's that we talked about in class today?

A - Answer the Question (what is it asking you?)
B - Back it Up (Use text evidence for support - don't forget to blend it in with your sentence)
C - Commentary (Slide 5explain in your own words how your quote supports your answer)

Hopefully this helps! You need to have this ready to go for tomorrow! See you then.

Mr. P

Dear Parents & Students -

Welcome to Mr. Phillips' English I - Honors! In our increasingly technology-driven society, there has got to be a way to keep both parents and students on the "up and up" as to what's going on in class. Here it is! It is my sincere hope that this blog is utilized to its maximum potential in this upcoming school year.

Freshmen, this is your blog. This is going to be a way for you to interact with your fellow classmates (at an honors level, of course), look for any homework assignment you may have missed, and keep your parents informed about the amazing stories that you're reading or the even more amazing stories that you're writing!

Bearing that in mind, there are, of course, basic ground rules:
1. Speak like an Honors student (i.e. - no profanity, insults, name-calling, text message lingo, etc.).
2. Write in complete sentences. You are in an English course.
3. Don't be afraid to post if you have a question about anything! There's a good chance that someone may have the same question as you!
4. Keep an open mind. There may be times when we have discussions via the blog and someone will say something you do not agree with. Consider their perspective.

I am looking forward to an awesome year and, again, please use this blog to it's maximum potential. I created it for you!
